ESG practices usher in a new milestone: Blockchain digital applications combined with net-zero green energy lead Taiwanese companies to connect with the world
On July 31, the Taiwan Future Vision Digital Sustainable Alliance and the Taiwan Blockchain Alliance co-hosted a notable forum, focusing on "2023 Industry Web3 Digital and Sustainable Development: Blockchain Technology Applications and ESG Net Zero Transformation Forum." The event saw the participation of leaders from the government, academia, and numerous enterprises.
Vice Premier Chen Wen-Chann, who couldn't attend the venue due to official duties, conveyed his congratulations through a video message: "This event focuses on three main themes: blockchain applications, ESG sustainable transformation, and green energy carbon credits. The release of the '2023 Taiwan Blockchain Industry Map and Key Report' by None Capital Publishing marks a historic moment for the industry. Through the lens of new technology transforming future life and financial ecosystems, in the ESG and green energy carbon credits section, we see Together Forever's vertical painted solar panels combined with the Great Sun energy storage cabinet, collaborating with Gaia Sustainable Farm. This collaboration has the potential to turn Taiwan's shining example of a UN carbon-neutral certified farm into the world's first UN-certified net-zero farm. Through this exchange of industry, government, academia, and research, following the first semiconductor miracle, we hope to create Taiwan's second industrial miracle."
Vice Premier Chen also assigned Vice Executive Yuan Nai-Wen Hsu of the Executive Yuan Southern Joint Services Center to attend on behalf of the government, encouraging collaboration and stating that discussions on such topics were typically held in Taipei. However, he emphasized the importance of involving enterprises from southern Taiwan, where 99.7% of them have not yet ventured into the blockchain sustainable field, aiming to collectively move forward.
In a video message during the forum, Lu Cheng-Hua, Director-General of the Digital Industry Agency, Ministry of Economic Affairs, stated, "Our country is undergoing a dual transformation of digitalization and net-zero. While the Digital Industry Agency focuses on digital transformation, achieving net-zero also requires the assistance of digital technology. I wish everyone fruitful results and hope that the digital industry will continue to strive for competitiveness, innovation, and the development of blockchain and industries in Taiwan."
Chairperson Chen Mei-Ling of the Taiwan Blockchain Alliance and the General Convener of the Taiwan Blockchain Alliance in her video message pointed out that the alliance, established in 2019, focuses on the development of applications with blockchain technology at its core. She emphasized the importance of sustainability in the face of climate change, and she highlighted the significance of Web3, ESG net-zero transformation, and green energy carbon credits as concerns for everyone. She commended None Capital for developing Taiwan's first key report on the blockchain industry and noted Taiwan's significant achievements in the application of blockchain technology in recent years.
Chairperson Lu Chang-Chiang of the Taiwan Future Vision Digital Sustainable Alliance stated, "We aim to create a green tourism and lifestyle alliance ecosystem, leading the nation toward green energy. Advocating for the application of green energy carbon credits, we utilize green energy to assist in the promotion of net-zero agriculture technology, aiming for negative electricity and carbon reduction. By incorporating low-carbon green energy as the core, along with leisure and tourism, we create social and business value, allowing green energy supply to integrate into life, building a circular energy center, storing environmental thermal energy, converting energy, using clean energy, conserving energy, reducing waste, and reconciling with the Earth."
Dr. Chen Hsiao-Chang, Executive Director of the Taiwan New Southbound Industry-Academia-Research Collaboration Promotion Association, shared insights on the theme "ESG International Linkage." He discussed Taiwan's 2025 net-zero transformation, which aims to create four major supply chains, driving private-sector investments of four trillion and the development of energy sectors such as photovoltaics, wind power, electric vehicles, and energy storage. He emphasized the key to success lies in talent aggregation and integration, as well as internationalization of enterprises. Companies entering the U.S. will expand green energy globally. Dr. Chen also advocated for companies to invest 5-10% in sustainable green energy carbon credits and technology in the ESG (Environmental, Social, Governance) aspect. He highlighted the cycle of mature Taiwanese companies investing in the U.S., and U.S. startups reinvesting in Taiwan, contributing to sustainable corporate practices.
Chairman Hsueh Wei-Li of Join In Forever Technology Co., Ltd. shared insights on "How to Start Digital Transformation and Net-Zero Applications from Daily Life." He introduced innovative products, including a new wallet that replaces traditional wallets and physical currency, NFT badge gift applications, and patented paint for vertical solar panels used on highway sound barriers. These technologies and solutions contribute to the promotion of green energy carbon credits and ESG sustainable development.
Chen Peng-Yu, Co-founder of None Capital, shared that the pioneering group's participation in producing the Taiwan Blockchain Industry Key Report this year is just the first step. They will continue to advance the integration of blockchain technology and financial technology applications. The applications cover a wide range, including CeFi centralized finance, DeFi decentralized finance, NFT industry and trading platforms, infrastructure, custody, wallets, and payment industries. With the increasingly mature integration of blockchain technology and finance, the blockchain seeks to promote new developments in financial business, universal supervision of virtual currencies, and paperless, green energy carbon credit environmental sustainability development.
During the conference, there were two major forums for discussion. The first forum focused on "How Sustainable Businesses Achieve Net Zero and Green Energy." Hosted by Chairman Xue Weili of Join In Forever Technology Co., Ltd., he stated, "In response to the 2050 Presidential Office's net-zero carbon emissions goal and the 2040 comprehensive electric vehicle policy, companies in the future can also donate solar panels for tax deductions. They won't be afraid of EU carbon tariffs, engage in green energy carbon credit transactions, and sustainably supply power to electric vehicle charging stations and streetlights for the benefit of the public." Other participants proposed additional sustainable solutions. For instance, Liu Minling, Chief Operating Officer of Join-It Technology Co., Ltd., mentioned reducing the waste of temporary mobile power purchases through solar mobile power rental stations. She also highlighted the issue of energy waste from overnight smartphone overcharging and urged businesses to store energy in offices and earn green energy carbon credits. Yang Xun, CEO of Gaea Sustainable Farm, discussed creating an ESG green energy sustainable farm that supplies greenhouses and underground irrigation systems. The advanced agricultural technology developed in Taiwan is being promoted in countries such as the Philippines, Israel, and the Netherlands to overcome challenges like humidity, heat, and typhoon damage.
Professor Weng Guoliang, Director of the Energy and Environmental Technology Center at National Chin-Yi University of Technology, mentioned collaboration with the ESG low-carbon green energy park at Yanzih Lake. This involves integrating energy storage systems and intelligent energy storage equipment to enhance the efficiency of smart energy management systems. The natural energy development system effectively reduces indoor CO2 levels, aiming for an environmentally friendly approach with carbon credits for green energy. Xu Buku, Deputy General Manager of Sustainability Department at Fu Tung Plant Co., Ltd., expressed support for the government's carbon inspection and emphasized achieving true natural carbon reduction with essential oil products. They use green energy to reduce carbon emissions from burning fossil fuels and decrease carbon footprints from transportation. Finally, Huang Zhengcong, Chairman of Taiwan Tourism Industry Alliance Association, promoted the use of vertical painted solar panels in tourist accommodations instead of traditional black ones, creating beautiful artistic installations with sustainable implications and contributing to the promotion of green energy carbon credits.
The second forum was titled "dESG Blockchain Technology Practical Applications," hosted by Chen Yixue, the founder of Grain God Capital. He stated, "Our blockchain pioneers, None Capital, a subsidiary of the pioneering group, produced the 'Taiwan Blockchain Industry Key Report' this year. Its applications include CeFi centralized finance, DeFi decentralized finance, NFT industry and trading platforms, infrastructure, custody, wallets, and payment industries. With the continuous improvement of blockchain technology and financial support, the blockchain industry is eager to promote new developments in financial business, monitor virtual currencies nationwide, and move towards a paperless environment for sustainable development."
During the discussion, participants shared their perspectives. Yuxian Li, Founder and CEO of GovernClimate Ltd, a digital climate technology company specializing in ESG climate governance, mentioned their dedication to applying AIoT, blockchain, and cloud technologies to develop digital infrastructure for climate governance. This infrastructure aims to provide businesses and industry chains with a more efficient, transparent, and verifiable way to navigate the long-term path of net-zero transformation.
Cheng Chi-yuan, Founder of RE:DREAMER, emphasized how the emergence of open databases would change the future development of all businesses, affecting the ways data is used. RE:DREAMER introduced ERC6672, the first consensus-recognized NFT format that can carry data. This innovation, combined with Taiwan's manufacturing and IoT industries, is expected to become essential infrastructure for future business and contribute to the increase of green energy carbon credits.
Yi-Chen Chu, CEO of BiiLabs Co., Ltd., discussed how web3 technology can make ESG circulation and transactions more reliable, trustworthy, and internationally liquid. Through friendly and secure wallet technology, it can accelerate the occurrence of dESG.
Jen-Chung Cheng, Business Manager at Jcard, shared the company's goal for the year to extend the platform's 200+ IPs. The first phase involves creating a trustworthy new digital environment, collaborating with the Taoyuan City Government to develop a digital souvenir platform for the public sector. The second phase aims to utilize blockchain technology to enhance credibility, building new services based on "trust certification."
The main focus of this event is on the application of blockchain and the practice of ESG net-zero green electricity carbon rights. It will bring unprecedented opportunities for industrial development to Taiwan. Through a series of specific cooperation and results, such as the UN-certified net-zero farm of the Light of the World and the key report of the blockchain industry going global, the innovative cooperation model will further demonstrate Taiwan’s competitiveness in the industry. Leadership in blockchain and sustainable development, setting an example for the international community.
